Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

Need some advice on starting breastfeeding when baby is 7 wk Empty Need some advice on starting breastfeeding when baby is 7 wk

Post by mummymaz Tue Jan 13, 2009 10:57 pm

Hiya
Hope u don't mind me posting this, but desperately lookin for some advice and not sure where on this site to look for it.

I started off trying to breastfeed my son Kai (who is now 7 weeks old) in the hospital and he wasn't interested and i got no support at all from any of the midwifes so i put him on formula. I have guilt tripped about it ever since and in the last few weeks he has had really bad colic and has been vomiting loads of his bottles. What i was lookin to find out from somewhere was info on whether i can do anything to stimulate my milk supply again and try putting him onto breastmilk as i really think this would be best for him.

Sorry to bombard u with all of this but thought there might be someone who could help give me info on this????,,

Many thanks (a very stressed out)Sad

Mary xxxx

A couple of members here have done it at various stages hun. It's not easy but if you want it enough its defiantely possible!!! Check the links above and if you go to the 0-6mth forum and check the thread 're-lactation' you can read about 'rafwife's journey so far.

Well done for giving it a bash - we'll be here :cheer: Good luck!!!! x

These ladies are really helpful. I do know it is possible, hard work but possible. If your prepared to do it then thats great. I hope it goes well. Just ask if you have any more questions.

You need plenty of skin to skin with baby. I know its recomended you spend alot of time in bed with baby lay on you.
Put baby to breat as much as possible. Breast milk works on supply and demand. The more baby goes to breast the more milk you will produce.
Eat plenty of oats as they are great for increasing your milk supply.

If you ask your Health visiter she should be able to put you in touch with an NCT brestfeeding councelor. Try your local breastfeeding group they tend to have one linked with them. They should be good for support too.

Kasia should be back with some great advise soon.

good luck.

Claire

cheers & welcome to the forum Mary.
Well done you for wanting to try again, its been proved very recently with one of our other new ladies that its totally possible. I think you need to be prepared that its going to be hard work & pretty emotional too. If you have read 'rafwife' post you will see she has accomplished so much already. Its very worthwhile seeing if theres a bf counseller in your area whos willing to come to the house & help get you started.

We will be here to help with any questions or if you just need someone to talk too.

Thanks everyone,,

i pumped last night and my milk came through straight away so i was really really pleased. I plan today on putting baby to the breast as much as i can but obviously still supplementing with formula until i have a good flow of milk,, i am also going to pump every 2 hours to help stimulate the flow.

My sister is friends with a health visitor who is going to get me the number of a bf advisor who can come out to the house to help me also.

I will deffo read the links you gave me as all the encouragement and support i can get is a huge help,,

thanks everyone again and i willl deffo keep u all posted,,

Wow fantastic hun!! keep going!

Also try and have as much skin to skin, with your little one close to your boobies and see if he will route to your nips, by squeezing abit out so he can taste it too will encourage him to latch x

Sorry for any bad typing,I'm :nak:
.
Just wanted to say well done, you sound very committed and the signs are very good. Get some fenugreek from health food shop that will help boost your supply. Also oats - have some porridge as well.
And get some chocolate hobnobs - chocolate stimulates your endorphin & oxytocin levels which will help stimulate you let down, and they are very oaty! Plus they are bloody gorgeous and you deserve a treat Very Happy

Keep us updated!

Tell us about yourself : People who have kids by more than 3 different men are SLAGS. They don't give a shit about the welfare of their children, otherwise they would be keeping their bloody legs shut and creating a STABLE environment for their kids, either in a stable relationship or as a single mother - because single mothers are perfectly capable of being fantastic parents. If you want to sleep around use some fucking contraception until you are sure your partner is in it for the long haul, it is not fucking difficult. Kids need stability - they don't need a succession of men coming in and out of their life.
