Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

HI

Just had a quick question - is it okay to use the same pump throughout the day without the need for sterilising it every time?

Thanks

Jazz

Depends how old your baby is.... After 6 months you don't have to sterilise any more, people do it more for their own peace of mind... I didn't sterilise my pump when I was working and pumping a couple of times a day but I did wash it through with very hot soapy water every time I used it...and used the blocker caps to keep it clean. Smile

The main reason to sterilise is to prevent stomach problems due to bacteria growing in milk, but as breastfeeding also dumps a load of antibodies in the stomach that prevents that, they get added protection Smile

Thanks

I will be back at work when he is 4 months - I thought hot soapy water was okay as this it what you use for hand expression.

Cheers for your help

You don't need to sterilize.

Hot soapy water will do just fine Very Happy infact as long as its kept the fridge (the pump) the times you are not using it in the day, you dont need to wash it until the evening.

How do get the residue out? I have been pumping at work for 10-mo and I have some dried milk residue (?) in part of the connectors. I wash every time with hot soapy water & a bottle brush, but have not found anything that can reach up into or clean those little holes the milk drips through.

Do I need to worry about this? MY baby seems to be doing just fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Tell us about yourself : I am a mom of 2 wonderful kids - 3 yr old boy (bf until 16 mo - he self weaned) and 10 mo girl (still currently bf). I am happy to be a working mother, with my kids in fulltime daycare, who has never had to give her child formula Smile - I am very proud of that.
