Fenugreek and diarrhea :(
Hi dear Moms!
My litte DD is 6 months old and I got back to work 4 weeks ago.
Unfortunately I'm not able to pump as much, as she needs. I only can
pump twice a day, about 5ozs total. That means, about 1-2 meals
Well, my lactation consultant from LLL told me to take fenugreek, so I
bougt capsules with 300mg each and took 3x3 capsules a day for 2 days.
Since yesterday evening I got a diarrhea, really really bad.
I don't know, if I should take the fenugreek anymore, I'm afraid, that
the diarrhea doesn't go away. And I didn't notice any change in my milk
supply yet. I'm so sad, because I hoped to boost the supply a bit with
that fenugreek and now I really feel sick because of that diarrhea.
What should I do?
Thanks sooo much for your help!

It is very common for fenugreek to cuse stomach upset, not only in mum but baby too. Personally, I'd stop taking it, feed baby as normal, and contact your LC tomorrow.

I agree with Katie, also do you have oats in your diet?
Porridge in the morning really helps with supply

Out of interest, if fenugreek can cause upset stomach in mum and baby, can fennel tea do this too?

Re: Fenugreek and diarrhea :(
Hmmm well fennel tea is quite goos in setteling an upset stomache (rich in calcium)
Why do you experience this after drinking fennel tea?

Re: Fenugreek and diarrhea :(
No - but I drink a fair bit of fennel tea, and LO has had an on/of upset stomach and dihorrea for no apparent reason since birth (he is now 14 wks and exclusively breastfed) ........ we've been referred back to the paediatricians by the GP as I can't see anything in my diet causing it and he's not 'ill' - I just wondered!

Fennel allergy is rare but not unheard of.

What breast pump are you using? When I went back to work (when Ellie was 5months) I was able to pump off 14 - 16oz a day in 2 sittings. More in the first session than the second. I always did both breasts, I pumped one until I stopped giving much, then the other, then the first then the other.
I found the Avent Isis much better / easier than the TT CTN one I started with.
Also make sure you have a drink of water while you are expressing as well, I always found that helped.
