Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

hey all, i'm Bev, i have a 3 week old lil girl who is just fabulous, not to mention the most patient lil baby as i have been having problems with my boobies, severly cracked and sore, i now know this was due to my incorrect positioning and still haven't mastered it completly but we are muddling through and my lil girl is putting on weight so i know she is getting enough, i just wondered if anyone else is having this problem and why am i continuing to suffer with soreness after 3 weeks???? i breastfed my 3 year old also and dont remember it being this hard? you would think i should be a proffesional but it's like it is first time all over? sorry to moan but need to get it off my chest (so to speak)

You may be a professional but your LO is just learning Smile

I found with my first it took several weeks for the pain to stop and with my second, it was much easier, but it was still around 4 weeks before the pain stopped. Smile If you know its a positioning problem you may wish to see a lactation consultant or your MW/HV who will be able to guide you as to a better position.

Try to get some lanolin to put on your nipples as this will help a lot with the soreness.

And hang in there, because it's always hard at first but once you both get the hang of it you will find it so much easier Smile

Awwwwwwwww ((((((((((((hug)))))))))) Hi Bev and welcome!

I can recommend lanolin (Lansinoh or Kamillosan) and mothermates hydrogel breast pads! (only available mail order - google them) I was lucky and had next to no problems with pain initially, but during growth spurts I really felt it - and needed all of the above in copious amounts. x

Yes its totally normal, my 3yr Old Olivia felt very similar to the second time round except this time Lottie had a supper suck! Totaly toe curling!

It took at least 6 weeks, and I used plently of lanisnoh which really helped.

welcome to the forum hello 871924 all babies are different feeders so its like youre starting all over each time except youre more clued up as to what to expect- thats not to say you wont come across something you need help with (me on no 5 still asking advice!) i had really sore nipples with no2 and no4, Aeryn had a smaller mouth which took time to adjust to it was a few weeks before it settled down. with Amelia i used nipple shields cos it was so bad- saying that they can affect your flow cos babe isnt getting skin to skin so its only a last resort and if youve got this far wouldnt reccomend!
the creams are great too, before long you wont even remember how sore they were!
good luck x

I had soreness the second time as well - the lanisonh is fab and Kamillosan is great for healing.
