Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

Does anyone know, or know where I can find out, what the WHO guidelines where before the current one from 2003? I know exclusive feeding was recomended untill 4 months instead of 6 but want to know how long the "continues untill 2 years of age and beyond" bit had been in and if its fairly recant ( eg less than 20 years) what it was before.
I'm starting to get a few "shes told old for that" comments so want to be fully prepared with a response, I know some a few people will say the "how long have they said that for everyone was fine before that" so it would be good to know.
I've just started reading "The politics of breastfeeding" so if its discussed in there i'll find out when I get that far.
Thanks

WHO produced a booklet in 2000, called 'Complimentary Feeding - Family Food for Breastfed Children'.
Have a look at it on http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/infantfeeding/WHO_NHD_00.1/en/index.html.

It recommends exclusive BF'ing up to 4 months (6 if possible) with breastfeeding continuing at least up to 2 years of age.

I think people also confuse 'exclusive breastfeeding' with breastfeeding, which is where this 'i will feed for 6 months' comes in.

The exclusive bit means before introducing any other form of food (sorry - know im teaching granny to suck eggs - but simple ways to explain to those that feel the need to comment Wink )
not switching to or introducing formula.
they then recommend a mixed diet of healthy foods and breastmilk, until at least the age of 2 years.
