Re: Blackstrap Molasses - a tonic for many things!
Black Strap Molasses is made from Sugar Cane. The roots of the sugar cane grow as deep as 15 feet and therefore are able to receive a broad spectrum of minerals and trace elements normally lacking in the top soils. The sugar is removed, leaving behind the exceptionally rich mineral/trace element cocktail, with a good selection of vitamins.
Sulfured molasses is made from young green sugar cane and is treated with sulfur dioxide, which acts as a preservative, during the sugar extraction process. Unsulfured molasses is made from mature sugar cane and does not require treatment with sulfur during the extraction process. There are three grades of molasses, Mild or first molasses, Dark or second molasses, and Black strap. These grades may be sulfured or unsulfured.
To make molasses, which is pure sugar cane juice, the sugar cane plant is harvested and stripped of its leaves. Its juice is extracted from the canes, usually by crushing or mashing. The juice is boiled to concentrate and promote the crystallization of the sugar. The results of this first boiling and removal of sugar crystal is first molasses, which has the highest sugar content because comparatively little sugar has been extracted from the juice. Second molasses is created from a second boiling and sugar extraction, and has a slight bitter tinge to its taste.
The third boiling of the sugar syrup gives black strap molasses. The majority of sucrose from the original juice has been crystallized but black strap molasses is still mostly sugar by calories; however, unlike refined sugars, it contains significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. Black strap molasses is a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. One tablespoon provides up to 20 percent of the daily value of each of those nutrients.

Re: Blackstrap Molasses - a tonic for many things!
How much do you have and how do you have it?
I tried their suggestion of melting in a bit of hot water and adding milk, but it was very rich and sweet, I'm not sure I could drink it every day. I added a bit to my porrige, but I think a whole tablespoon would be too much.

Re: Blackstrap Molasses - a tonic for many things!
I add a spoonfull to baked beans if i am having them - it tastes lovely in them.
I tried it with milk and it was too sweet - and almostseemed to curdle it!
Generallt i just take it straight off the spoon - it doesnt taste too bad and its over and done with then (and the taste does grow on you!)
Oh, should be at least a tablespoon a day - some sites recommend 2 - 3 spoons per day - but i just take 1 - its up to you x

You can use it in baking in Tea loafs and tea cakes too.
