Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

topic2 I don't think my milk is enough for my Lo anymore

Post by salocius Thu Aug 21, 2008 9:33 am

My Lo is 11 weeks and I don't think my milk is good enough anymore.

Last couple of days she's been feeding every hour to 2 hours and still being hungry. Where she's been sleeping through the night she has started waking up again once or twice Sad(

Last night she fed from both sides which she hasn't done for a long time the last time she was taking both sides was when she was about 2 weeks.

I feel completly exhausted with the feeding, keeping the house fairly clean and tidy ( I have a dog so have to hoover everyday otherwise his hair gets everywhere) and entertaining my eldest daughter.

I've also been bleeding (sorry TMI) since Sunday unsure weather its AF or that I have over done it again. It seems stranged that it started Sunday when i was picking up nephew alot he weighs a loads and I could really feel it in my stomach, its something we've always done when playing with him and he's been after me doing it for a while but i've never been able to cos of scar. I'm thinking that perhaps i've done something internally to cause the bleed. My scar itself looks a little red.

What doesn't help is that my mum keeps saying give her a bottle she won't know any difference.I've told her that I can't afford to put her on formula as its so bloody ex[ensive at £8 a tin. Funnily enoguh my mum thinks that will last her a fortnight to a month. Everytime we see her and Lo starts crying for a feed she always says I would feed you if i can but i can't. She also says i'd let you stay with your sister the night but I can't feed you. This makes me feel awkard. With my eldest she basically took over everything as I was living at home at the time and she was bottlefed and it wasn't that expensive 9 yrs ago

My DH wants me to continue BF for as long as possible but I don't know if i can if my milk is no good anymore.

Lo was weighed this week and she's put on 5oz in a week.

I really don't know what I should be doing, either way I cant please everyone and its beginning to stress me out which don't help. We're going on holiday Saturday so tbh I don't fancy introducing the bottle just yet as it would mean more stuff for us to take.

It sounds very much to me like the 12 week growth spurt hunny - i was the same :aww:

It will settle in a few days, and life should revert back to normal (until the 16 wk one lol!)

With regard to formula - her belly would know the difference now hun - many babies dont take that well to the change. if you were to only ff, you would use a tin a week (i ff my 1st 2 - and both averaged a tin a week).

If you can manage it, up your oats in take and stay well hydrated, and try and sit tight for a couple of days and see how it goes.

the weight gain is terriffic - and tells me your milk is more than enough! :aww:

Im sorry your mum is like that - its an unnesseccary pressure you can do without - but well done hubby!

I`m not expert only been bf 10wks, but from what i`ve read on here does sound like a growth spurt to me. If you were FF you`d put an extra oz in the bottle but bubs has to get you to make that extra milk & to do that they need to feed constantly. Sounds like you are doing a fab job & try not to take any notice of your mums little coments i get the same sort of thing from my family. Maybe you could express some milk into a bottle & give that to your mum to feed her.
As for the bleeding not sure could be af or maybe you have over done it, i`d keep an eye on the bleeding & speak to hv if still concerned.

I agree it definately sounds like a growth spurt :aww: All this is very normal. Your milk is obviously more than good enough with a gain like that hun :aww: It IS such hard work getting through these growth spurts but it DOES get better I promise you :aww:

It can't help not having your mum's support Evil or Very Mad But at the end of the day you shouldn't feel the need to make anyone happy apart from you and your baby :aww:

Thanks everyone.

My DH is getting annoyed with my mum now too. He says i shouldn't keep my mouth shut and just say get used it!

Have just made some oat biscuits mainly to take them on hols tomorrow but i don't think they will be around for long tbh.

I agree with the other ladies. Sounds like a growth spurt. Your milk is all she needs to see her through these growth spurts. And honestly tell your Mum to just "Deal with it". Your baby, your choice.
