Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

I am thinking I have read somewhere before that supply can drop when you are pregnant? Well Brody has only been having a tiny feed at bedtime for a few months now so I would have thought it had dropped quite alot anyway but the last 2 nights Brody has had a couple of sucks then just pulls away and wants his dummy and bed!

At first I thought maybe he wasn't getting anything anymore but I'm now thinking maybe this is just him slowly self weaning? But my worry is, what if in a few nights he goes back to wanting a longer feed again? Will there still be anything there?! I'm pretty sure there isn't much there anyway!

That might open hun x

I just wanted to say though, at the moment I think possibly hes weaning himself, I think if you didn't have enough and he wanted some he would be at your breast longer and getting frustated, if hes chilled out and quite happy to go bed like that, then just follow what he wants, if he does say 3 days on want more, it will be case of trying to get your supply up again which I am sure he can do anyway.

But personaly I wouldn't worry, he sounds happy to me.

When your milk supply begins to decrease, your nursling may respond by increasing or decreasing nursing frequency. Your child will most likely make up for decreased milk intake by eating more solids (indeed, increased solid food intake is one way that pregnant moms might track a decrease in milk supply). You can go ahead and encourage increased solid foods - just keep in mind that if your baby is under a year, milk should be his/her primary source of nutrition. As long as your baby is gaining weight adequately and nursing at least 3-4 times a day, he/she is unlikely to need an additional source of milk (see Is my older baby getting enough milk?).

yep, its cos estrogen talking simply. you produce it now to keep being preg, but it has bad effect of milk supply. Ususally it hits hard in 1st trimester, and eases up later. Could be taste changed and Brody disslikes it a bit so nurses less.

That sounds like Ellie was when she weaned herself. Because she had been only having a couple of sucks and then going down for a few nights. I tried not offering the breast (happy to have done so if she asked for it), however she just happily went to bed and made no indication of wanting the breast. I know how sad it feelds but at the same time happy that it was her choice and really proud of her.
