Hi im new and got a problem
Hiya, I have a lo of 6 weeks and is exclusively bf. Since day 1 we have had problems. Latching on, not feeding, blocked ducts, sore, cracked, bleeding nipples :tear:
Once we got home from hospital my midwife showed me how to latch her on properly as i never got an supposrt in hospital and was just left to it (being a second time mum think they pressumed i bf ds, but i didnt)
So latching on was great once she and i got the hang of it, but now the latching on has went to pot and im in agony. No matter how much i try to get the latch right i cant.
Any advice on how to master it?
Also how many feeds should lo be getting in a 24 hour period?
Thanks Dawn

Re: Hi im new and got a problem
First of all welcome to the forum, and well done on breastfeeding! :aww:
Please take a look at these latching videos
http://www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_video.html
They are very helpfull, what has happened since the latching has started to go to pot?
Between 2 and 6 weeks newborns feed roughly 8 - 12+ times per day, maybe more if approaching a growth spurt, 6 weeks is usualy a time when they do hit a growth spurt and feeds will increace until you match that babies supply.
But saying that it all depends on lengths of the feeds and how much hind LO is getting.
Do you feed per breast or change every 10 mins?

Re: Hi im new and got a problem
When i try to latch dd on she wont open her mouth wide enough and then when she does i thought i was putting my nipple into the roof of her mouth but been having alot of pain and she is just sucking on the nipple but is getting milk. She does have her whole mouth round the dark bit though.
I cant seem to grasp the idea of nose to nipple.
She feeds maybe 7-8 times per day and sleeps for 7 hours at night so she misses a during the night feed.
I only feed her from 1 side at a time and always have done. She doesnt seem to need the other side, but have noticed that some nights not even an hour after feeding her she wants fed again so i will offer the side that she last fed on.

Re: Hi im new and got a problem
Ok when Olivia wouldn't open her mouth wide enough I used to do this:-
I hope you understand what I mean
It isn't unusual for it to happen, they just get lazy and comfortable, then thats when you start noticing problems.
Do you use Lanisinoh for your nips? it really helps with the soreness.
Yes I remember the pulling away when its still in her mouth, wait till shes got teeth
- Sit on the bed
- Get into cradle position, probably best to put a breastfeeding pillow underneath so DD is supported.
- For example: put LO on the left breast but as you do, hold the back of her head with you palm.(right hand)
- Put your index finger just before her jaw underneath her face, and the your thumb on the otherside of her face just before her jaw (where the join is)
- Put a little pressure on either side of her jaw, and this should get her to open her mouth wide.
- then as she does, make sure her bottom lip touchs underneath your nipple first, then bring her top lip over the top of you nipple (areola)
- So its an under and over move
I hope you understand what I mean
