Vitamin D supplement? Empty Vitamin D supplement?

Post by jools Fri Aug 31, 2007 5:32 pm

I read today in the Annabel Karmel book that if exclusively breastfeeding, babies need a vitamin D supplement from 6 months to 2 years!

I'd never been told this before so I asked one of the HVs at the clinic today when I went to get Brody weighed. Anyway she said she would have to check with someone else as she can't keep up with all the changes they keep making! Shocked Laughing

She came back and said it IS now recommended that if they are not having any formula at all they should have a supplement and to go to the pharmacy!

I haven't yet been to the pharmacy but just wanted to see if anyone else has been told this, how much it costs and how I would give him it?!

Sorry if I'm being thick! Embarassed

around 15 min a day of sunlight will do the trick!

take walk, or enjoy fresh air for few moments and there is no need for drops!

vitamin d supplements are not as good as getting it from sunlight either, not nearly as effective or available to our bodies

why do we feel the need to supplement everything rather than looking at out lifestyle and diet and making sime tiny changes!!!?

Post by Helen Fri Mar 14, 2008 2:49 pm

i was just browsing through some past posts and found this one about vit d supplement.

i am so glad i read this now! the hv was only talking about this last week and was saying it would be a good idea for me to start taking the supplement and the way she said it made it sound like if i didnt i was not giving bethany the nutrients she needed. :tear:

then i started thinking about the news report that was on the tv a couple of month ago about the increasing numbers of kids with rickets these days. i proper started stressing after i had spoke to her thinking bethany was gonna get bloody rickets and all because of me!

i am so glad i read this post today as i was actually gonna go to the chemist tomorrow to have a look at supplements! thanks forum!

LLL BF Answer Book Pg 438:
As a general rule, well-nurished mother's don't need to take suppliments while BF. While suppliments may be of benefit to mothers who are malnourished or on a restricted diet, the best way for a well-nurished BF mother to get the nutriments she needs is through a balanced diet.

Hun there has also been an increase in formula feeding over the past 10 years aswell as children not going outside to play and eating crap.

Its not because of breastfeeding, I totaly agree with Lait d amour Smile
