Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

i had bethany 3 wk 2 days ago and have been exclusively breastfeeding. thing is i thought my periods would take months to return but i got it last night! was wandering my my nipples had become ultra sensitive over the last couple of days (feeding as been hurting for the first 10ish seconds when she first latches on and i was wandering why cos its really sensitive - was even prescribed some cream from doctor!). does that mean my fertility has returned or could that still be a while?

All women are different, and yes it does sound like a period.

When your period returns you are fertile, your nips will be slightly more sensative during a period, so a good latch is essential to prevent it.

Also I highly recommend you get some lansinoh, apply that before or after every feed ( you can leave it on during too ) this will really help your nipples and prevent terrible soreness.

Here is a sticky on Mentruation and Breastfeeding.

I started my period properly when Oli was about 10/11 months, some women go all the way until they wean or even have regular cyles after there post bleed.

We are all different hun, but please don't think breastfeeding means no babies, it can happen!! Very Happy

well thats another problem i'm having - latching on. over the last couple of days she wont open her mouth very wide and thats another reason why my nipples are sore. its all coinciding! any tips on how to get her to open her mouth wide?! i've gone from perfect latch for weeks to her not opening her mouth proper!

I went through a stage like this with Emily when my nipples were very sensitive at 3-4 weeks but my periods did not return until she was 7/8 months old.

You know...I think its not period at all, but you are still bleeding postpartum. It could be that you stopped bleeding for a while or it became really light and now picked up. It is normal to bleed up to 6 weeks after delivery and bleeding can be different for every woman or even after second or third delivery. Its normal for bleeding to go on and off for a while too.
I has postpartum bleeding with DS for 4 weeks and it was medium heavy all the way thru and not really painful. After DD was born I had few days really strong cramps and bled so heavily I wouldn't sit on anything before having towel inder my bum. But it slowed down after few days and I had just "drops" and smudges till Maya was 6 weeks.
Anything up to 6 weeks could be considered postpartum bleeding.
Sensitivity could be due to latch, possitioning or yeast infection.

On other hand: did you do a lot recently? like heavy lifting, walking a lot, lots of cleaning, etc? Because sometimes if lochia is geting stronger after almost stoping its a sign to slow down and take some time off.

I agree too early for it to be a period more likely a post partum bleed!
If nipples are sore try ALOE VERA GEL from Holland & Barrets very soothing and doesn't have to be wiped off B4 a feed!
Different positionong too (helped me) lying down or rugby ball position (baby's body under your arm, head in hand) and feed as much as possible(which I am sure you already do)
LotsaLuv :aww:
