* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)

Post by gem1981 Sat May 10, 2008 10:20 am

Hi ladies

Well, yesterday I went for lunch with my dad and brother and although I'd fed Daisy before we left the house, she woke up for a feed as soon as we got there, so.......
I sat in the disabled toilet and fed her. I know you are probably all rolling your eyes, lol. I said to hubby 'you wouldn't eat your dinner in a disabled toilet'.
So, there is a really big pub by us with a big play area for kids and loads of picnic benches and I said to hubby I think we'll go there soon and if Daisy needs feeding I can sit and feed her because theres loads of room so I won't feel like people are looking. I thought this might be a good place to go the first time I feed her in public. Hopefully, I can get more confident at it then???

It'll come with time i regularly feed in public now and it never enters my head what other people think, if they don't like it in my opinion they shouldn't be looking, after all what can be more natural. We have lots of these 2 meals for 1 pubs/restaurants near where i live and i actually noticed a sticker on the doors between the pub bit and the kids wacky warehouse play area saying that the establishment is breastfeeding friendly so was dead chuffed. When we go out if its really busy i tend to ask a member of the staff (them that seat you at a table) if we can have a table in a quiet area or a table in a corner of the room rather than being smack bang in the middle of everyone. Your baby has every right to be fed where it is comfortable, hygenic and not in some toilet, How many people would eat their dinners in the toilet.

It sounds like great place to start :aww:
you WILL get the confidence - the 1st time is the most daunting! I was petrified!
I know that most of the ladies on here actually enjoy feeding in public now - it kind of gives you a sense of power, and you feel liberated and proud! cheers

The 1st time I BF in public an old man came to look at my daughter his eyed popped out of his head when he realised I was BF. This made me really nervous about BF in public again...I went on to BF my 1st daughter for 15 months.

Your confidence will grow, We were all nervous but now we just do it.

Kay even bears her huge boobies to Jehovas Witnesses.

it will come in time but its a good idea to start somewhere you feel comfy, maybe take someone with you for moral support? mates/ family. i maybe go on about my experiences alot but when i fed my first i lived in a house with my partner and lots of other men! i used to leave the room til i realised i was missing out, the first few times were awful but we all got over it, with my 2nd and third it was easier still, i fed my 4th all over the country and with willow its so much of a second nature i sometimes forget where i am!!!
before you go make sure youre comfy in the clothes youre wearing and you have easy access to your boob maybe practice to see which work best? (clothes not boob!) dont leave it til your babe is realy hungry cos then youll both get flustered and wil make it more difficult, just some ideas to make it go smoothly- from experience! Embarassed
hope it goes well and you all have a lovely time x x :aww:

And another tip i was given from here is to nurse in front of a mirror at home - that way you can see how much is on show, what tops are best, what positions etc are best.

:haha:

It just goes to show how discreet you can be though - people dont realise what you are doing until they a couple of inches away from your babies face!!!

:aww: Dont be so hard on yourself hun! The first time public feeding can be so daunting! The big pub you spoke about sounds like a really nice place to start with. Like Kay says, make sure you've got a comfortable top that is easy for you to get your boob in and out of easily lol.

The only place i still feel a bit dodgy about is feeding in my local catholic church! God i feel so pathetic because its so hypocritical really because God made our bodies to breastfeed our babies so its so natural to feed in a place of god. But i still feel a bit naughty doing it there! lol. Bloody catholic upbringing! Mad

Post by gem1981 Mon May 12, 2008 1:17 pm

Hi ladies,

Thanks for all your messages, I went to the big pub yesterday!! Fed Daisy in the beer garden. Only one problem - my husband!! He doesn't seem to like the idea of me feeding in public. Daisy started to grizzle so I said I'd feed her and he was saying 'she's ok', but then she really wanted feeding so I said we either go home or feed her here, so he found a table for us to move to where no one was near and no one should see me, so we moved there and I fed Daisy with a blanket over my shoulder so no one could see anything. Then a glass collector came round and hubby moved te glasses that were on our table to a different one so the glass collector wouldn't come near me!! I said 'you're worse than me!!' I didn't feel uncomfotable as no one was near, and even if te collector came to our table he wouldn't have seen anything. I just think it would be easier if hubby was more laid back about it. Normally he's the most laid back person ever!! Typical.

Well done!

Dave was a bit like this at first - we were in Macdonalds with a group of teenage lads nearby, and he kept repositioning the buggy!
And he didnt find it amusing that i flashed at the Jehovah Witnesses Embarassed
I think it is because they probably think they are the only ones that should see your boobs Rolling Eyes
Dave is fine with it now - they just get used to it Very Happy

I agree with Kay, my hubby would say she will be ok till we get somewhere better, and he has put the buggy in front of me too. In the end i said what do you want whats best for your daughter or stick her on a bottle in case someone sees me bibs. What could he say. He's still a bit funny(thinks he should be the only one to see them) but is getting used to it gradually.

I am pleased to say my hubby completely supportive and has never had a problem with me getting em out when mollie needs feeding, i've had them out at his dads, nans, mac donalds, kfc the pub (might add never infront of JW's tho) its like i've said many times if people dont like the way i feed my baby (Doing what is best for her health) then they shouldn't look and should keep their opinions to themselves.
