Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

I know I am a Mum of 7, but have never had this problem before! Any advice would be gratefully accepted.
Zachary will be 1 on Thursday(9 months corrected due to him being prem!), and for the past 2 weeks or so has not stopped crying, and for no apparent reason. Sad The only time he stops is when I am holding him :bf2: , I don't necessarily have to be BF him, just holding him does. I know that babies go through separation anxiety, but his Dad or siblings could be holding him and as soon as I go away into another room he hits the roof. I am all for the Continuum Method (where baby is strapped to Mum) but he is too heavy and having the other kids it's just not practical, and I don't think you are meant to start it at a year old anyway!!
My Mum said to try and wean him away from me gradually, just a few minutes at first then getting a little longer each time, but I just can't bear the thought of him screaming for me. Embarassed
I know he is not ill, hungry. wet or anything else as, as I say as soon as I pick him up he is all smiles and Ma-ma. ba-ba. Da-da.......just had a thought do you think he is taking me for a ride? LOL

Any thoughts anyone?
Lotsaluv x

:aww: It sounds about right for his age hun!

  • Shy or anxious with strangers
  • Cries when mother or father leaves
  • Enjoys imitating people in his play
  • Shows specific preferences for certain people and toys
  • Tests parental responses to his actions during feedings. (What do you do when he refuses a food?)
  • Tests parental responses to his behavior. (What do you do if he cries after you leave the room?)
  • May be fearful in some situations
  • Prefers mother and/or regular caregiver over all others
  • Repeats sounds or gestures for attention
  • Finger-feeds himself
  • Extends arm or leg to help when being dressed

This has been taken from a milestone website for a 1 year old, I dont always follow them, but it does sound as though its something they all go through.

It can be upsetting but it wont go on forever, just keep with it and do what you feel is right.

Thanks everyone. I have been a little protective of him I suppose, given his prematurity and the fact that he is my last, so it is to be expected that when I'm not there he is fretful. He enjoys being outside so I think it will be plenty of walks to the park from now on.
Thanks for the hugs x x
