Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

Should he be having both breasts???? Empty Should he be having both breasts????

Post by kay Fri Apr 11, 2008 11:59 am

Was just wondering when babies usually want the 2nd breast at a feed?

He dream feeds through night, and just has the 1 breast, but through the day when he is on and off more, i am needing to offer 2nd breast. He will feed off first, and then will get grumpy and keep coming off. when i latch him back on, he gets frustrated and cries. My breast feels soft by this point.
I will put him on 2nd breast and he guzzles like mad quite happily until he is satisfied.

Could it be he is lazy as the breast gets emptier, or is he just emptying and wanting more? His weight gain is fantastic, and his poos are still exactly the same (yellow, every bum change etc)

:p:

Sounds to me like he is draining the first breast then wanting more. Very Happy

The midwife who helped me said that sometimes they will want both breasts and sometimes they will be happy with one she likened it to sometimes we want a big meal with a pudding and sometimes we skip desert!

You are doing the right thing by following your babies lead be guided by him and you wont go wrong flower

How do you know when the first breast is drained?

Baby would unlatch and if offered again would pop of the breast again, and again. Or suck a lot but no swallowing woul be visible.

Never heard it explained as dinner and dessert, but Mollie will sometimes be happy with one and on other occasions will want both, but i have noticed if she has finished with one breast she will latch back on then off then on like has been said already, so when this happens i offer the other breast, sounds like your experiences are perfectly normal.
