Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

My left boob hurts... It hurts a lot... So much so that I can't bare to have it touched... But its not hot, and there are no lumps and I don't have that fluey feeling you get with mastitis, well not yet. So what is it..? Neutral Lil miss is also more sicky when she feeds from it, and it feels itchy inside afterwards before it becomes painful again. I don't want to go to my doc atm as its a sub doc and he was rude, aggressive, patronising and just down right nasty last time I went, and I can't ask for another one. Sad

If you dont think its mastitis could it possibly be thrush?

Has she got any white patchs in her mouth?

The itchy feeling can be either mastitis or possible thrush.

Thrush infection

Thrush (yeast infection) can occur in your baby's mouth and spread to your nipples, as well as deep in the breast ducts. If you have symptoms of mastitis that are not going away in spite of treatment, pain in the nipple area during and after breast-feeding, sharp breast pain in between feedings, or nipples that look very pink, you may have thrush. This condition can also begin as a sudden onset of pain or burning when breast-feeding has been going well without problems.
If you have thrush symptoms, both your nipples and your baby's mouth should then be checked for thrush. Treatment for thrush requires that both you and your baby be treated, even if your baby doesn't have symptoms. For more information, see the topic Thrush.

If its thrush lil miss doesn't have any signs... but I woke up feeling like I'd been run over by a bus and was freezing cold then boiling hot then freezing cold...so I've resigned myself to the fact that it's probably mastitis... Sad

It probably has to do with the lack of feeding over the past week and the length of time between feeds as we have been out with people who disapprove of bfing big babies Sad

Disapprove of BFG big babies!!! What a joke! Sounds like they are jealous to me and that's plain silly, tell those people to take a walk!

I hope you are feeling better soon, drain your boobie as much as you can and change your bra pads frequently or better go bra less and sleep topless at night. Sounds like maybe you are now developing 2 problems go and get it checked out by doctor.:aww:

Ooo dear yes does sound like mastits, please follow this

Whether you start antibiotics immediately or decide to wait for 24 hours, you can help yourself by trying the following:

• Make sure your baby is latched on properly at the breast and feeding well.

• Try different feeding positions if they help your baby to latch on better.

• To keep the affected breast well drained, breastfeed as often as your baby wants to.

• Express milk by hand or with a pump, after feeds, if you feel your baby has not used the breast well

• If you feel ill, rest as much as you can.

• You may find that it helps to apply warmth to the affected area, such as a flannel or compress, or have a warm bath or shower. Some mothers find that cold compresses work better.

• If it helps to massage your breasts, do so very gently while your baby is feeding to help the milk to flow from them. Vigorous massage can actually make mastitis worse by pushing the "leaked" milk further into the breast tissue.

• You can also take painkillers to help with the pain. Ibuprofen can be taken whilst breastfeeding and may help to reduce inflammation as well as pain. Paracetamol is an alternative.

If it is diagnosed early, mastitis is easy and quick to treat and it won't be long before you feel 100 per cent better. If you start a course of antibiotics, (regardless whether you had an infection) be sure to take all of them. If your breast remains tender and you still have a temperature, contact your GP.

But if you've had it before im sure you know what to do hun, I am so sorry you have got it again.

Like Pink has said you shouldn't stop feeding because others dont approve it isn't fair on you or lil one :aww:

Thanks everyone...

I kinda lost all my confidence as I got a series of disapproving comments concerning me bfg lil miss past 6 months and since then I've just don't feel comfortable feeding in public... Sad

Sadly its had a negative effect.

On the upside I feel much better today.. I fed only from my sore boob for most of the day... Expressed in a hot shower, taken paracetamol, slept alot, drank a lot of water...and its not too bad now. Smile Tried to get an appointment but sadly can't get one until next week (apparently Mastitis isn't urgent Rolling Eyes) and its with ar*ehole doctor
