Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

topic2 Please dont judge, but i want to stop breastfeeding

Post by mcdiarmid356 Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:39 pm

I have thought long and hard about this and feel that dd s now weaning herself off too.

Abi is 8 months and to start with i only wanted to bf for 6 weeks so i personally think ive done really well

Up until the other week she was only feeding twice a day, first thing am and last thing pm, about 6.30pm. She doesnt drink anything during the day, and im abit worried about this. I have bought loads of bottle and cups etc but nothing was working, i heard of a doidy cup and she will take wee bits from it but not alot. Still learning i guess.

Now when i try to feed her at night she isnt interested at all, and because of this i feel my supply has dropped.

So the time has come to stop. It seem selfish but im getting married in 10 weeks and dont want to bf on the day, she will be 11 months by then.

Any advice on how to stop? Do i start to feed her formula via the doidy cup?

8 months of :boob: is a wonderful achievement, Abi has had a great start thanks to her mummy so please dont feel your being selfish now its ending. It sounds like shes weaning off and as shes only having :boob: morning & bedtime you may want to either do smaller feeds at this time or drop a feed and then slowly reduce the time on the other so yours boobs dont get uncomfortable. One of the others will probably advise you better.

Also :gdluck: for your wedding day, hope you pop back on & share a pic or two with us x

Just remember to do it slowly. Try and cut out feeds one at a time. I went cold turkey with Tia because she was so ill and ended up engorged.

Don't bother with bottles at all. Put milk in a cup. If you've avoided bottles so far why start now Smile

And remember, you may not feel like this tomorrow (or next week etc). There have been many times where I've gone "right thats it, I've had enough" and ended up changing my mind again. Saying that, I'd just follow the lead of your child. If she says its time to stop, its time to stop Smile and you can only big yourself up over that because you have been there for when your baby needed you Smile Or just big yourself up for breast feeding full stop Wink

Ive been feeling like ive wanted to stop for a while but continued as she was still interested in feeding. Im not sad about the thought of stopping, i suppose it makes it easier that she is dropping feeds herslef instead of me doing it.
I like to think that ive done myself proud and its me that making her thrive!!!
In all honesty, i want my boobs back, i want to go on a night out, for a nice meal and not worry about feeding her before i go or her wakening on the off chance for a feed etc.

you wont be judged on here! 8mths is great! if you feel like youve come to the end then is obviously right for you. like squiglet says- do it slowly though then you dont become engorged, sounds like your lo has made the decision anyway if shes cut back feeds herself. she will need breast or formula though until she is a year when she can start on cows milk. hope it works out for you :aww:
oh congrats on the wedding too Very Happy

:aww: Dont feel selfish!

If your baby was feeding left right and centre, it would be a little different, but it sounds like your little one is ready to stop.

Well done on reaching 8 months - and be proud that you have given your baby the greatest gift you can :aww:

8 Months is a great achivement .

Agree that you need to drop feeds one at a time to save yourself!

If you feel it is the right time then this is what you should do. :aww:
