Frequent overnight feeding
[i] :boob: My little cutie Katie has started waking 1 1/2 hourly from about 0300hours, feeding for 10 mins and falling asleep. I am coping alright but wonder has anyone anyone else experienced this and any solutions I could try. She is now 16 weeks old. BF seems still to be going well.....................Katie still sleeps in her crib beside my bed and only gets into our bed for feeds and late morning. Also we are heading off to the sun in a few weeks, any hints and tips on diet etc. TG

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
Sounds like a growth spurt .. tbh the first 6-7 months are full of them .. you could even say every 1.5 hours is good meheh. Expect it to possibly get harder and dont be fooled by the need to wean. Your doing a marvellous job mummy sounds all very normal. xx Going to the sun make sure you drink plenty and offer boob lots to LO.

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
OOo thought I might add that your LO is feeding probably more at night too because its around the time there is far too much going on in the world to have a proper feed in the day dont worry it will pass x

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
Thanks for advice, its so funny when she wakes me it feels as if she has just gone back to sleep. At least she will sleep between feeds and I suppose as I am more relaxed and drowsy and have better milk production at this time. It just makes me laugh..............thats the main thing. Thanks TG

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
I agree with Sinful.
Growth spurts are common around this age, and as she has much more she wants to do in the day, shes saving it all for later.
Like you said you have a good milk supply, and your coping.
Well done :aww:

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
Im glad someone posted this as dd is 17 weeks and wakes ever hour and a half, feeds for 5 min then off to sleep. She does this all night. During the day she isnt as bad but still feeds loads, feel im constantly feeding.
If its a growth spurt it been going on for about 5 weeks now, im knackered.
I have started to wean her but only on wee bits, which she loves.

i waited till bethany was 6 months before puting her on solids and despite what hv's and family said, it didnt make the slightest difference on how long she slept at night without waking. She is on 3 full meals a day as well as snacks in between and supper and she still wakes 3/4 times and sometimes only suckles for less than a minute lol.
I'm told constantly by hv's oh its only for comfort - just give her water during night and put her back in her own room and she'll soon stop waking. But i kinda believe that theres nothing wrong with a baby waking and wanting the comfort and knowledge that her mummy is nearby - thats why i bring her in bed with me the first time she wakes in night. Its like when they say to let babies cry it out - i believe babies cry for a reason and i dont want to let her cry it out cos even if shes just crying for comfort then this is a big need for a baby. Just my opinion lol :aww:

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
When she wakes she is feeding and not sucking. I cant understand her though as she was sleeping through for 14 hours since 3 weeks old. All this started when i got mastitis so not sure if its all related or not.
I started to introduce solids as she was constantly watching what we were eating and so i thought id try her with some rice, and it went from there really. Maybe the solids will bulk her up weight wise. Hv said to maybe try solids to get her to put weight on as she is 9lb 4oz now and they are worried as she is only putting on 3-4oz per week.

Re: Frequent overnight feeding
You lucky girl - bethany has never done 14 hours sleep lol
i think thats a good gain hun. :boob: babies dont tend to put as much weight on as ff babies. bethany used to put 6ish oz in a fortnight at that age. and as for what the hv said about giving baby rice to out more weight on - bm is a lot higher in calories than most solids.

I think your doing a brilliant job with :boob: and i think her weigh gain is brill :aww:

Re: Frequent overnight feeding

What can I do to increase my baby's weight gain?
There are several simple things that have been proven to help with weight gain:
Stop or decrease solid foods, particularly if baby is younger than 6 months. Most solids foods have fewer calories and nutrients than breastmilk, plus they tend to replace (rather than add to) the higher-calorie, more nutritious breastmilk.
Sleep with your baby (this increases prolactin and frequency of nursing).
Learn baby massage -- this has been proven to improve digestion and weight gain.
Carry baby throughout the day in a carrier/sling; get as much skin to skin contact as you can. Both of these things have been shown to improve weight gain.
Nurse often - at least every 2 hours during the day and at least once at night. Frequent nursing increases baby's milk intake.
Make sure you're allowing your baby to completely finish one side before you offer the other by waiting upon her cues that she is finished; i.e. pulling off herself and looking satisfied, going to sleep, changing from an active suck/swallow to more of a pacifier suck, etc. Always OFFER the second side, but don't worry if she doesn't seem to need it. It's much more important that she be allowed to completely finish one side than that she nurse both sides. By doing so she will be assured of reaching enough of the richer, more caloric hindmilk that helps her to go longer between feedings.
Use breast massage and breast compression during nursing.
Pump or hand express for a couple of minutes before nursing. This will remove some of the foremilk so that your baby receives more of the richer, higher calorie hindmilk.
If supplements are medically indicated, breastmilk is preferred over formula as a supplement (exceptions to this are rare), and the average fat/calorie content of mom's milk is higher than that of formula. Mom can pump for 5-10 minutes after nursing (don't interrupt or shorten the nursing session to do this), and offer this higher-fat hindmilk to baby as needed. This is also an option for moms who normally offer expressed milk when they are separated from baby.
