Cloth nappies
Hi ladies
Does anyone use real nappies? I went to my baby cafe group today and a couple of the moms there were using cloth nappies and its got me thinking about using them. To be honest, the only thing putting me off is the initial outlay. Does anyone know of somewhere to buy from that isn't really expensive? Its tricky because I know if I buy too cheap they will be no good,
Any advice?

Re: Cloth nappies
Gem i will try and find a link but i no that some councils offer you and incentive to use them! e.g. free trials, etc. My council doesnt though :iconsad:.
The only thing that put me off re-useable nappies is what a friend told me. She works in a nursery and said that almost all of the babies with a certain kind of re-useable nappy had really sore bums. It wasnt the cloth ones. I didnt no anyone who used re-useables so cant confirm it for certain and i'm sure it wont be all kinds!

Re: Cloth nappies
Theres loads of info on money saving and environmental stuff of re-useables at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cheap-nappies
I love martin lewis lol.
The link he gives about council incentives is http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/health/1128508316,54423
Some of the councils give cashback and other incentives, free trial packs, free laundry trials, etc.
I've just found this aswell http://www.realnappycampaign.com/index.html it has a number you can ring for information (0845 850 0606) and you may be able to get £30 off your first purchase!
Theres also some places that do rating systems on the nappies, nappies to hire, cheap trials, etc:
http://www.babykind.co.uk/nappytrial.htm#hire
http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/
http://www.kittykins.co.uk/
Hope all this helps :aww:

Re: Cloth nappies
We use them too tots bots nappies with mother ease wraps.
I wish I had used them with my other 2 but was put off by thinking it would be too time consuming.
But I decided to try with Jack and we have had no problems with leaks or soreness and they have been really easy to use.
I would definitely reccomend them

Gem, i just had a look at the link sounds like you got a real good bargain! You sound like me - i always buy things on the spur of the moment! I bidded on a small freezer on ebay last week and only measured up after i'd bidded - to find the freezer was too big! :awno:
Luckily someone bidded higher than me just before it ended!

Re: Cloth nappies
We do disposables occasionally at night and when out for long- only if nappy change is needed and we use Nature boy and girl nappies , they are ecological and Maya gets no sore bum like after "other" brands.

Thanks so much everyone for your help. Just one more question (actually, there will probably be alot more once they arrive!) I heard somewhere about a special bin to put the soiled nappies in. Any ideas?

Re: Cloth nappies
all you need is a bucket with a lod. Got mine off ebay too
this is what I have http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-WHITE-16L-LARGE-NAPPY-BUCKET-PAIL-LID-Nappies-Bin_W0QQitemZ300230283752QQihZ020QQcategoryZ20397QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem its big enough to fit 2 days worth of washing, and easy to clean.
Now you need to decide how you are going to store them soiled before washing:
wet or dry.
We do dry: I use fleecy liners to catch poo and then rinse solid poo off and most dirt from nappy, then store them in bucket/pail till next washing. We wash every 2 days. We change her bum when needed - poo- or every 2-3 hours max.

Now you need to decide how you are going to store them soiled before washing:
wet or dry.
http://www.diaperjungle.com/washing-cloth-diapers.htmlThere are 2 basic methods for storing wet and soiled cloth diapers, the wet pail method and the dry pail method. In the wet pail method, all cloth diapers are placed in a pail filled with water. Storing the diapers in water (usually accompanied by baking soda) is said to help prevent stains from setting. When wash day comes, the water is drained in the bathtub or toilet and then the diapers go into the wash. This method has lost much of its popularity due to odor issues that arise from stagnant water, the potential for messiness, and the potential drowning hazard present by having a pail full of water in the vicinity of children. A wet pail can also be inconvenient when you consider that AIOs and diaper covers often need a separate (dry) pail.
