Breastfeeding tip : Recognising a growth spurt

* You feel as though you haven't got enough
* Baby getting upset at the breast (though can be a sign of other common problems)
* Baby is breastfeeding often or almost nonstop (feel like baby is always wanting to feed)
* A baby who was previously sleeping through the night is now waking to breast feed several times
* Baby will latch and unlatch, fussing in between

Time between feeds Empty Time between feeds

Post by clairelana Fri Oct 24, 2008 7:56 am

Right............Hmmmm Kaydi is still not going long between feeds and alot of the time wants to be attached to me constantly. I hear people talking about 3 -4 hours between feeds. Were lucky if we get to an hour between. I think she just snacks on me as well as using me as a dummy. I have started to offer both sides each feed as it was only 10-15 mins before she wanted more.

If i give her expressed milk usually 4-5 oz she will not want a feed for about 2 hours. Thats unless she is tired when she will want me to get her to sleep.

This proberly sounds like another growth spurt but she's been like this from day 1. I don't mind really as i'm loving feeding her mself. I just wondered if i'm doing something wrong. Am i putting her to the breast to quickly when she cries?

On a couple of occasions i have given her some baby juice in a bottle. Usually in the car as she screams everytime we get in. This also seems to settle her for quite a long period.

Any tips?

Olivia went through these phases too, even after a growth spurt.

Its perfectly normal, she just loves to be with her Mummy!

Your not doign anything worng by putting her straight to the breast, its comfort and security she wants and breastfeedign gives her that.

Like this quote

A newborn baby has only three demands.

They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts,

and security in the knowledge of her presence.

Breastfeeding satisfies all three.

And that continues throughout your breastfeeding relationship :boob:

One question though - when you feed, do you feed on the one, and then the next feed from the same again before moving over? or swop sides after a certain time during a feed?

I feed from one side till she stops feeding then i usually take her off as she's asleep or she wants to play. I then next time she wants to feed put her on the other side. She only actually feeds for about 5 mins each feed but sucks for comfort after that. I can tell when she is feeding as i can hear her drink. I can also see her swallow. Alot of thetime she is on she is not drinking.

Claire - my Tiny Terror fed like this until he was about 7months and starting to eat most of his food. He is now down to 3-4 hours (though at nursery he goes without for 9 hours as he will not take milk from a cup or bottle, only water).

Tell us about yourself : People who have kids by more than 3 different men are SLAGS. They don't give a shit about the welfare of their children, otherwise they would be keeping their bloody legs shut and creating a STABLE environment for their kids, either in a stable relationship or as a single mother - because single mothers are perfectly capable of being fantastic parents. If you want to sleep around use some fucking contraception until you are sure your partner is in it for the long haul, it is not fucking difficult. Kids need stability - they don't need a succession of men coming in and out of their life.
